Untitled Short Play Three

I'm actually going to turn this into a short film.

CHARACTERS:
VIOLET
BILL
MAN 2

********************

SCENE ONE

Lights up.

What looks like a large box with a glass front separates the upstage and downstage. There isn't much in the "room". There's only a lot of chairs scattered and facing different directions.

VIOLET stands behind the glass, holding a vase. She picks one of the chairs and sits down. She sets the vase next to her on one nearby chair. She looks at the hem at her dress, which ends below her knees.

BILL walks by and about to pass, when he sees VIOLET, but stops in front of the glass.

VIOLET not paying attention, gets up and goes to a different chair, which faces another. She silently mimics a conversation with an imaginary friend

BILL looks around to see if someone else comes, before turning back to her.

VIOLET still doesn't pay attention.

BILL smiles at her, before tapping on the glass.

At first, VI0LET ignores him, but eventually looks in his direction.

BOTH look at each other, curiously.

VIOLET gets up and slowly moves over to the glass.

BOTH stand near each other, staring.

BILL waves hello to her.

A big smile comes over her face, before she waves back.

BOTH look each other over.

BILL puts his palm on the glass.

VIOLET looks at his hand, before sadly shaking her head and looking at him.

BILL takes his hand slowly away.from the glass, looking at her.

VIOLET walks away from the glass and goes to a different chair.

BILL watches her.

VIOLET quickly peeks at BILL.

BILL waves to her, before hesitantly turning away from the glass and walking away. He takes two steps.

VI0LET rushes back to the glass and starts furiously banging on the glass.

BILL stops and turns his head back to the glass.

VIOLET watches, before a bittersweet smile comes over her face and she slowly puts her hand on the glass.

BILL moves back to her.

VIOLET leaves her hand on the glass.

BILL smiles, then looks at her palm and puts his hand directly opposite hers.

BOTH stand with their hands like that, looking at each other.

MAN 2 walks onstage and looks at the glass. He sees BOTH, then walks over, staring at them, and crosses his arms.

Pause.

BILL slowly turns to MAN 2

MAN 2:

Who are you?

BILL:

I'm just a passerby.

MAN 2:

Well, she doesn't need any of your kind.

BILL.

But, she looks lonely.

MAN 2:

She's not lonely. She has her own company.

BILL looks at her.

VIOLET sees MAN 2 and quickly moves away from the glass.

BILL looks at MAN 2, then turns back to VIOLET.

BILL:

Who are you to say what she needs?

MAN 2:

I protect her. I know what she wants.

BILL:

Have you asked her?

MAN 2:

She doesn't talk.

BILL:

But, she does know how to communicate.

MAN 2:

That's right. Violet does.

BILL:

Is that her name? (looks at VIOLET) Violet?

VIOLET smiles and MAN 2 nods.

MAN 2:

That's the name she responds to.

MAN 2 looks at VIOLET and the smile quickly drops off her face.

BILL:

And, what is your name?

MAN 2:

That doesn't matter.

MAN 2 shoves BILL away from the glass box.

VI0LET turns to the glass and looks at BILL, sadly waving to him.

BILL waves to her and smiles.

BILL:

I'll be back tomorrow, Violet.

BILL turns away and walks off.

MAN 2 looks at her, before patting the glass.

MAN 2:

You don't need him.

VIOLET refuses to look at MAN 2 and moves to a chair that has its back to him. She sits down with her back completely to him.

MAN 2 just stands there.

Lights down.

SCENE TWO

Lights up.

VIOLET stands up, looking out the glass box. She seems to be expecting someone.

BILL walks onstage and looks at her. He holds a bouquet of daisies.

B0TH smile at each other.

BILL waves hello to her.

BILL:

I bought you some flowers, Violet. How do I give them to you?

BILL looks for a place to put them.

VI0LET looks to the side, then moves over there. She motions for him to come over.

BILL follows her there.

VIOLET taps on the wall.

BILL hears her tapping, then presses on the area VIOLET taps.

She stops and a flap falls open inside the "room".

VIOLET folds down the flap, so it's flat, then looks at BILL, smiling.

BILL slides the flowers through the window, resting them on the flap.

VIOLET takes them, then turns away and finds the vase.

BILL watches her, smiling.

VI0LET picks up the vase, then puts the flowers in. She sets the vase back down, then picks up the water pitcher nearby and pours a little water into the vase. She sets the water pitcher down. She stands there, looking around the room. A handkerchief lies on one chair then goes over to it. On the chair next to it, conveniently rests a perfume bottle. She moves over and picks them both up and sprays the handkerchief with the perfume a couple times, then sets the perfume bottle back down on the chair. She walks back over and presents it to him.

BILL seems a little surprised at this, bill doesn't react other than with all embarrassed grin. He smells it, folds it up gently, slips it in his shirt pocket, then pats his pocket.

VIOLET reaches out of the window and touches BILL.

BILL looks at her, then smiles and moves closer.

VIOLET touches his lips.

BILL holds her hand to his mouth and gently kisses her fingers.

VIOLET shyly looks away. A smile comes over her face.

BILL smiles at her, after he lets go of her hand and she takes it back. He reaches in and brushes her hair behind her ear.

BOTH are completely involved with each other's attention, when MAN 2 walks onstage and sees them.

MAN 2:

I see you're back.

BILL swings his head, then almost takes his hand away.

VI0LET looks at MAN 2, but grips BILL'S hand.

BILL looks at her, then smiles and looks back at MAN 2.

BILL:

I am.

BILL looks at VIOLET and touches her hair.

MAN 2 looks at her, then looks back at BILL. He starts rubbing his chin.

MAN 2:

So, you want to be her friend.

BILL looks at VIOLET, and still holds his hand.

BILL:

Yes, I do.

MAN 2.

There is something you can do, if you'd like to be her friend.

VIOLET starts shaking his hand.

BILL turn to her.

VIOLET shakes her head, as if to warn him.

BILL:

Relax. He won't hurt me.

VIOLET looks at him, then slowly lets go of his hand.

MAN 2:

Let's go.

BILL looks at her and smiles.

BILL:

Everything will be okay.

MAN 2 starts walking off and BILL follows him.

Before they exit offstage, BILL looks at VIOLET and smiles.

VIOLET stands there for a few seconds, then closes the window and moves away from it. She goes over to one chair and sits down. She sits there for a full minute, before the door opens in the back.

MAN 2 stands in the doorway.

MAN 2:

You come on along now.

VIOLET gets up and just stands there.

MAN 2 walks over to her, then takes a hold of her arm.

VIOLET tries to yank his arm free.

MAN 2 grips onto her arm, then drags her out of the room. He slams the door, when BOTH are inside the doorway entrance.

[A full thirty seconds, or minute, passes.]

The door in the back opens. MAN 2 stands in the doorway.

VIOLET walks in, crying. She goes over to one seat in the middle, turning to the chair in front of her.

MAN 2 looks offstage.

MAN 2:

Come on.

BILL walks into the glass box and stands near the doorway.

MAN 2 moves away and closes the door.

BILL moves over to a chair at one corner.

VIOLET turns and smiles at him. She gets up and goes over to him.

BILL looks at her.

She sits down across from him.

BOTH look at each other.

BILL starts to talk, but soon realizes no words are coming out of his mouth.

VI0LET puts her forefinger over his mouth and shakes her head.

BILL just stares at her.

VIOLET:

Don't.

VIOLET seems a little shocked something came out of her mouth. She touches her own lips, aware of what just happened

BILL still stares at her, then touches her mouth.

Black Out
